　　インディアンに冬服を （１）

　朝日新聞で読んだことがあるかもしれませんが、本校の英語教師のカーン・セコイア・ホアイト・バード・ウォーキング先生は米国モンタナ州のシャイアン族への援助を求めています。ここは、冬は零下２０度以下になり、寒さでインディアンが（特に子供が）死ぬこともあるそうです。冬服を送ってインディアンを援助しようではありませんか。インディアンの子供たちのためにできるだけのことをしませんか。衣類は着古したものでも結構だそうです。下記に送ってください。

　カーン先生から一言

　「インディアンサマーのことを知っている人がいるかもしれませんが、インディアンウインターのことを知っていますか。モンタナ州のインディアン保留地の冬はとても寒く、子供は暖かい冬服がないため学校に行けません。学校は保留地から遠く、バスも電車もタクシーもありません。馬のある子は馬で登校しますが、ない子は歩かなくてはなりません。でも、何と言っても暖かい服がなければ登校すらできないのです」

　　LET’S SEND WINTER CLOTHES TO INDIANS

　　As some of you many know through the Asahi Newspaper, Mr. Khan Sequoya White Bird Walking, English teacher at our school, wants us Japanese to help the Cheyenne tribe in Montana State in the US. The temperature there drops below 20 degrees Centigrade in winter. Because of the freezing cold, some Indians, especially children, are even dying. Let’s send clothes and save them. Let’s do what we can for the children. Any clothes, old or worn, will be appreciated. Please send them to:

The following is Mr. Khan’s appeal:

　　“Some of you may have heard about Indian summer, but I wonder if anybody knows about Indian winters. In Montana, winters on Indian reservations are very cold. Every winter many boys and girls cannot go to school because they do not have warm winter clothes. Schools are often far from home. On Indian reservations, there are no city buses, no trains, or no taxis. In order to go to school, you can ride a horse or a pony if you have one, or you must walk. But without warm clothes to wear you cannot go to school at all.”
