横綱になる方法
199X年、米国出身の大関ブッシュ山は５０回目の優勝をしたが、横綱に昇進できなかった。日本相撲協会によると、相撲は日本独自のものであり、日本人なら誰しも心の奥に持っている大和魂を外人は持っていないから、と言うのがその理由であった。
ブッシュ山は如何にしてこの大和魂を得るべきか何日も何日も考え、やっと結論に達した。それは日本人の心を移植してもらうことであった。それで日本人の心臓移植を受け、やがて晴れて横綱に昇進した。
これに対して世界中が報復措置に出た。英国ラグビー連盟は、ラグビーはイングランドが本家本元であるから、日本人はイングランド人の心臓移植をしなければラグビーをすべきでないと主張した。米国野球協会も、野球はアメリカで初めて行われたのであるから、日本の野球選手はアメリカ人の心臓を移植すべきだと宣言した。マラソンの発祥の国、ギリシャも日本のマラソン選手はギリシャ人の心臓を持つべきだと主張した。
ところで日本人がど肝を抜いたのは世界ホットドッグ協会が日本の新聞に掲載した次のような意見広告であった。
「犬の心臓を移植しないうちは、ホットドッグを食べないで下さい」
HOW TO BE PROMOTED TO YOKOZUNA
In 199X a U.S.-born ozeki sumo wrestler, Bush-yama, won his 50th championship, but he was not promoted to the highest rank of yokozuna, because, according to the Japan Sumo Association, (a) sumo is uniquely Japanese, and (b) foreigners lack yamato-damashii (Japanese spirit) which every Japanese possesses deep in his/her heart.
After thinking for many days how to get yamato-damashii, Bush-yama finally reached the conclusion that if he received a Japanese heart he could get it. Therefore, he underwent heart transplant surgery. It was not long before he was successfully promoted to yokozuna.
The world retaliated against this. The British Rugby Union claimed, “Japanese people should play rugby with their hearts replaced with Englishmen’s because it originated in England. The US Baseball Association protested that a Japanese baseball player should get an American heart because baseball was first played in the U.S. Greece, the birthplace of marathon, insisted on Japanese marathoners’ receiving Greek hearts.
But the most shocking to the Japanese was a protest ad placed by the World Hot Dog Association in every Japanese newspaper:
“DON’T EAT HOT DOGS UNTIL YOU HAVE A DOG’S HEART.”
