[19] 君はジキル博士かハイド氏か ARE YOU DR. JEKYLL OR MR. HYDE?

　　　君はジキル博士かハイド氏か

　８月２０日、サハリンで３歳のコンスタンチン君が熱湯に落ち、おお火傷をした。サハリン知事は北海道知事に助けを求め、８時間後、４人の医師を乗せた日本の飛行機がサハリンに飛び、坊やと父親を乗せて札幌に戻った。二人はビザなしで入国した。８月３０日、札幌の病院で４時間にわたる皮膚移植手術が行われた。９月９日には母親が子供を元気づけるため招かれた。日本政府役人、飛行機の乗員、医師の連携プレーにより、坊やは助かり、今では飲んだり、食べたり、話したり、笑ったりできるまでになった。今までに1,700人以上の日本人から寄付金が寄せられた。母親にとって日本人は天使のように思えたことだろう。
　でも、同じ日本人が第2次世界大戦のときは大変残酷だった。マレーシャの教科書にこう書いてある。「数千人の中国人の男女、子供が剣で殺されました。赤ん坊が空中に投げられて剣で刺されました。数百人が木の家に閉じ込められ、生きたまま焼かれました」
　日本人は天使だろうか、悪魔だろうか。君はどうだろう。君がジキル博士になれることは素晴らしいことだが、ハイド氏にもなりうるとはなんという恐ろしいことだろう。

　　　ARE YOU DR. JEKYLL OR MR. HYDE?

　　A three-year-old boy, Konstantin was badly burned when he fell into boiling water in Sakhalin on August 20. Sakhalin’s governor asked Hokkaido’s governor for help. Eight hours later, a Japanese airplane with four doctors aboard flew to Sakhalin, and brought the boy and his father to Sapporo. They entered Japan without visas. The boy had a four-hour skin grafting operation at a hospital in Sapporo on August 30. His mother was invited to encourage him on September 9. Thanks to a good team play of the Japanese government officials, flight crew, and doctors, the boy has been saved. Now he can drink, eat, talk, and smile. So far, more than 1,700 Japanese have made donations to him. Probably Japanese seemed like angels to his mother.
　　However, the same Japanese were very cruel during WWII. A Malaysian textbook says, “Thousands of Chinese men, women, and children were put to the sword. Chinese babies were thrown into the air and stabbed to death. Hundreds of Chinese were put in wooden houses and burned alive.”
　　Are Japanese angels or devils? How about you? It is wonderful that you can be Dr. Jekyll, but how horrible it is that you can be Mr. Hyde, too!

[18] エストニアの悲劇 ESTONIA, A COUNTRY OF TRAGEDY

　エストニアの悲劇

　友達を殺さねばならぬのなら、君は殺すだろうか。他の国のために日本人が日本人を殺さねばならぬのなら、君はそうするだろうか。
　約５０年前、エストニア人はお互いに殺しあった。なぜだろう。１９３９年、ソ連は突如ポーランドに侵入、翌年エストニアを占領し、共産党政府がソ連の支配下でできた。傀儡政府に反対の６万のエストニア人が虐殺されたり、シベリアに連行されたりした。
　１９４１年、突如ドイツはソ連に侵入し、エストニアを「解放」した。エストニア人はソ連軍を追いだしたドイツ軍を歓迎した。ドイツ軍は対ソ連戦のためエストニア人に入隊を進め、入隊したエストニア人を最前線に送った。
　一方、ソ連はシベリアからエストニア人を最前線に回した。この戦線でエストニア人同士が友としてでなく敵として向き合うことになった。１９４４年ソ連はエストニアを奪還し、ドイツ軍を退散させ、反ソのエストニア人を何千人も処刑した。
　エストニアの歴史は悲劇の歴史だ。今、エストニアは独立を切望している。

　ESTONIA, A COUNTRY OF TRAGEDY

　　What if you have to kill your friends? What if Japanese are forced to kill Japanese for the benefit of other countries?
　　Estonians killed Estonians about 50 years ago. Why? In 1939 the USSR suddenly invaded Poland. The next year the Soviet troops occupied Estonia. A Communist Party Government was made under Soviet control. 60,000 Estonians, who were against the puppet government, were killed or sent to Siberia.
　　In 1941 Germany suddenly attacked the USSR, and “freed” Estonia. Estonians welcomed the army because it drove out the Soviet army. Germany recommended Estonians to join the army to fight against the USSR. After joining the army, they were sent to the front.
　　The USSR, on the other hand, brought Estonians back from Siberia, and sent them to the front. Here, Estonians met Estonians not as friends but as foes. In 1944 the USSR returned to Estonia, and sent away the German army. Thousands of anit-Soviet Estonians were put to death.
　　The history of Estonia is a history of tragedy. Today Estonians strongly want independence.

八岐の大蛇(やまたのおろち)（下）

　諸君は「八岐大蛇」の話の由来を知っているかな。いろんな説があるが、以下はそのひとつ。
　毎年、台風が出雲にやって来ると、斐伊川が荒れ狂い、上流で取れる砂鉄のために真っ赤に染まり、堤防が決壊し、木は根こそぎになって流れ、稲田（いなだ）という稲田は洪水で水浸しになった。　
　台風の季節になると、村人は悲しみに沈んだ。それと言うのも、川の怒りを鎮めるため、娘を生（いけ）にえにしなければならなかったからだ。すでに7人もの娘が犠牲になっていたが、その年も、また娘がひとり人柱になるところであった。
　素戔嗚尊（すさのおのみこと）は出雲に来てこの話を聞き、いたく感じ入り、村人に堤防をもっと強固に、もっと高くするように命じた。村人は汗水流して働き、やっと堤防が完成した。その年、また台風が来たが、堤防はびくともしなかった。村人は飲めや歌えやで喜んだ。お礼に上流の砂鉄でできた美しい剣を素戔嗚尊に贈った。また、例の娘は素戔嗚尊の嫁となった。

YAMATANO OROCHI (2)

　　Do you know the origin of the story of “Yamatano Orochi”? 　There are several opinions about it. This is one of them.
　　Every year, when typhoons came to Izumo, the Hii River became wild. It also became red because of the iron sand produced in the upper river. The banks were broken down. Trees were uprooted and washed away. The rice fields were flooded.
　　Every typhoon season, the villagers were sad, because they had to sacrifice a young girl to quiet the anger of the river. Seven girls were already sacrificed. That year again, another girl was going to be the sacrifice.
　　When Susanoo came to Izumo and heard about the story, he felt sorry for the girl. He ordered the villagers to make the banks stronger and higher. They worked hard, and at last they built strong banks. That year typhoons came, but the banks were quite all right. The villagers were happy. They drank, sang, and danced. They presented him a beautiful sword made from the iron sand in order to show their thanks to him. By the way, Susanoo married the girl.

八岐の大蛇（やまたのおろち）（上）

　昨年萩の旅館で見た八岐の大蛇ショーは面白かったかな。以下はその話。
　素戔嗚尊(すさのおのみこと)が出雲の斐伊(ひい)川に来た時、老夫婦と娘が泣いていた。訳を尋ねると、老人が答えた。「八岐の大蛇という怪物が娘の稲田(いなだ)姫(ひめ)を食い殺しに来るんでごじぇいます。えっと最初は8人のにょうばんこがおるますだが、7人を食い殺いてすまいますたわ。そぅの目はあきゃいほうずきのようでにゃ。かあだは８つのかすらと8つの尾っぽを持っちょって、苔や木が生えちょうますわ。長さは8つの谷、8つの山にまたがっちょって、腹は血であばかんようになっちょりますわ」。素戔嗚尊は「わしは天照大神(あまてらすおおみかみ)の弟だ。お前の娘をわしにくれれば、娘を助けてやろう」と言った。老人は「喜んで差し上げますわ」と答えた。
　素戔嗚尊は強い酒を8つの器に用意させた。やがて八岐大蛇がやって来て8つの頭をそれぞれ8つの器につっこみ、酒を飲み、酔って寝てしまった。素戔嗚尊は大蛇をずたずたに切った。その時、尾のひとつから美しい剣が出て来た。草薙(くさなぎ)の剣(つるぎ)がこれである。素戔嗚尊は稲田姫を嫁にもらった。

YAMATANO OROCHI (1)

　　Did you enjoy Yamatano Orochi show at a hotel in Hagi last year? This is the story.
　　When Susanoono-mikoto came to the Hii River in Izumo, he met an old couple and a girl who were crying. He said to the old man, “Why are you crying?” The man answered, “Because a monster called Yamatano Orochi is coming to eat our daughter, Inada-hime. First I had eight daughters, but the monster has eaten seven of them. Its eyes are as red as a ground cherry. It has eight heads and eight tails. Moss and trees grow all over its body. It is so big that it covers eight valleys and eight mountains. Its stomach is always full of blood.” Susanoo said, “I am Amaterasu Oominokami’s brother. If you give me your girl, I will save her.” The old man said, “I am glad to give her to you.”
　　Susanoo ordered them to prepare eight barrels of strong sake. Soon the monster came and put each head into a barrel and drank the sake. When it was drunk and fell asleep, Susanoo killed it. At that time, he found a beautiful sword in one of its tails. It is now called Sword of Kusanagi. Susanoo married the girl.

[15] 小瓶と大格闘（下） BATTLE AGAINST A BOTTLE (2)

小瓶と大格闘 (下)

　私はオレノマンＣの会社に手紙を出した。瓶と格闘したことを書き、終りにこう付け加えた。「ところで、以前のねじるふたの方が開けやすかったのですが、なぜ今のふたに変えたのでしょう。追伸、私は４６歳で、指は以上ありません」。例の傷だらけのふたとしわくちゃのラベルを同封した。
　１０日後、手紙とオレノマンＣ４本が送られてきた。「ふたを開けるのに大変苦労され、申しわけございません。ねじ式の方が、今のより開けやすいとのご指摘ですが、４年前、オレノマンＣを飲んで死亡すると言う事件がありました。誰かがふたをあけ、毒を入れ、ふたを元にもどしたようです。このため、新しいふたを考案しましたが、ご存知のように、今度のふたは一度開けると元にもどすことができません。今のふたができてからは、犠牲者は１人も出ていません。しかし、今のふたが開かなければ飲めませんので、今のものを改良するつもりでございます。今後ともどうぞご愛飲下さいますようにお願い致します」
　会社も瓶と格闘したのか、知らなかった。

BATTLE WITH A BOTTLE (2)

　　I wrote a letter to Orenoman C Drink Company. I told them about my battle against the bottle. Lastly, I added, “By the way, it was easier for me to open the old screw caps than the present ones. Why did you change the old caps? p.s. I am 46 years old. All my fingers are all right.” I put the broken cap and the wrinkled label in the envelope.
　　Ten days later, a letter and four bottles of Orenoman C Drink were sent to me. It said, “We are very sorry that you had a hard time opening our drink. You said that the screw caps were easier to open than the present caps. In fact, four years ago, a man died when he drank our Orenoman C Drink. Someone had opened the cap, put in some poison, and fixed the cap back on the bottle again. So we made a new cap. As you see, once the present cap is taken off, it can never be put back on the bottle again. Since the new cap was made, no one has died by drinking our drink. But if it does not open, it is useless. We will improve the present cap. We hope you will continue drinking our drinks.”
　　I did not know that they too had a battle with their bottle.
