イラクの富樫ノ左衛門(上）

　片倉邦雄さんを知っていますか。駐イラク大使です。昨年１２月に日本人の人質が解放されましたが、毎日新聞は片倉さんにインタビューしました。

毎日新聞：大使自ら人質の下を訪ね歩いたとか。

片倉さん：五か所回りましたが、面会は許可されませんでした。でも一度だけある工場の金網の中でソフトボールをしているのが見えて、車を止めて見ていたら、ボールが転がって日本人の人質の一人が取りに来たんです。その人が「日本人ですか」と声をかけて来たんで、「大使館の片倉です」と言うと、びっくりして金網にすりよって、２０分ぐらい話をしました。このときは一番うれしかったですね。あとで分かったんですが、工場長は知っていて見逃してくれたんですよ。

　なかなかいい話ですね

　　Do you know Mr. Kunio Katakura? He is the Japanese ambassador to Iraq. Last December when all the Japanese hostages were freed, the Mainichi Newspaper had an interview with him.

Mainichi: You yourself visited several places to meet Japanese hostages, didn’t you?

Katakura: Yes. I visited five places, but they did not allow me to meet Japanese hostages. However, one time, I saw some Japanese playing softball inside a wire fence of a factory. I parked my car, and was looking at them. Then, the ball came rolling toward me, and one of the players came running after it. He noticed me, and said, “Are you a Japanese?” I replied that I was Katakura from the Japanese Embassy. He was surprised, and came close to the fence. I was very happy. Later, I learned that the factory chief had found us talking but that he pretended not to see us.

　　Isn’t this a nice story?

[20] 「ワンワン」か「バウワウ」か “ONE-ONE” OR “BOWWOW”

　　　　　「ワンワン」か「バウワウ」か

　学校祭で桂枝雀の落語を聞きましたか。聞いてない？　じゃあ、話してあげましょう。
　ご存知のように、犬は「ワンワン」と鳴きますが、アメリカでは「バウワウ」と鳴くそうですな。一体、どっちが正しいんでしょうね。「ワンワン」か「バウワウ」か。
　まず、「ワン」の[w]の音。これはキスをするときのように、唇を丸く突き出すんですな。犬はあんなでっかい口で、キスができますかな。スヌーピーならともかく、ほかの犬はキスなどできやしない。だから、[w]の音をきちんと出せるわけがない。
　次に、「ワン」の[n]の音。これもちゃんと出せない。これは舌の先を前口蓋にくっつけるんですな。犬はあんな長い舌でそんな芸当ができますかね。[n]の音を出すたんびに、パッと舌を3、4重に畳んで、長さを調節しなきゃならない。犬が舌を畳むって、考えられますか。うまく畳めたころにゃ、窒息死していますな。
　要するに、犬は正しい発音で「ワンワン」って、鳴けないんですな。「ワンワン」と鳴くものと思っていなさるなら、大間違い。だから「バウワウ」の方に軍配があがりますな。

　　　　　“ONE-ONE” OR “BOWWOW”

　　Did you enjoy Shijaku’s comic story during the school festival? You missed it? Then let me tell you.
　　As you know, a dog in Japan barks something like “one-one.” However, a dog in America barks “bowwow.” Which is correct, “one-one” or “bowwow”?
　　First, let’s take up the [w] sound in “one.” When you pronounce it, you stick out your lips and make them round as when you kiss. Can a dog kiss with such a wide mouth? Snoopy can, but the other dogs cannot. Therefore, a dog cannot pronounce the [w] sound correctly.
　　Next, a dog cannot make the [n] sound in “one,” either. When you pronounce it, you put the tip of your tongue on the front roof of your mouth. Can a dog do so with such a long tongue? Whenever it pronounces the [n] sound, it must quickly adjust the length of its tongue by folding it three or four times. Can you imagine a dog folding its tongue? It will choke to death by the time it succeeds in doing so.
　　Conclusion: a dog cannot bark “one-one” correctly. If you think it barks “one-one,” you are wrong. Therefore, “bowwow” is nearer to the barking of a dog.
