ボストン茶会事件

　第5課で習ったように、１７７５年にパトリック・ヘンリーは「戦いは始まった。ボストンの同胞は火ぶたを切った」と言ったが、ボストン人はどんな火ぶたを切ったのだろう。
　１７７３年、英国東インド会社の茶の在庫は７６００トンもあり、英国はこの救済を決め、東インド会社が茶を直接アメリカで売ることを認めた。それ以前は、東インド会社は茶をまず英国商人に売り、英国商人はアメリカ商人に売り、アメリカ商人は入植者に売っていた。今や、東インド会社の茶はどの茶よりも安くなった。
　当時、大半の入植者は密輸のオランダ茶を飲んでいた。オランダ茶の商人は東インド会社の安い茶が出ると大損害になると考え、独立急進派と組み、東インド会社の入港を阻止することにした。
　１７７３年１２月１６日の夜、２隻の東インド会社の茶船がボストン港に停泊していた。約６０人の一団がインディアンに偽装して船に乗り込み、３４２箱の茶を海に投げ捨てた。その値段は２７００万円であった。

TEE BOSTON TEA PARTY

　　As you studied in lesson 5, Patrick Henry said in 1775, “The battle has already begun. Our brothers in Boston have already begun to fight.” Now, what did the Boston people do against Britain?
　　In 1773 Britain decided to help the British East India Company, because the company had 7,600 tons of unsold tea. Britain allowed the company to sell its tea directly to American colonies. Before that, it had sold its tea to British merchants, who then sold it to American merchants, and then they sold it to the colonists. Now the company’s tea became cheaper than any other.
　　In those days most of the colonists were drinking Dutch tea. Dutch tea merchants were afraid, “We cannot make money if the cheap tea comes to our markets.” They joined the people who wanted independence from Britain. This group decided to stop the company’s tea ships from coming into American ports.
　　On the night of December 16, 1773, two tea ships from the company were in Boston Harbor. About 60 people in Indian dress got on the ships, and threw 342 cases of tea into the sea. The price of the tea was 27,000,000 yen.
