だいだらぼっち

　先月、第７課で「ぺコス・ビル」と言うほら話を読みましたが、以下は日本のほら話です。
　昔々、尾張の国に「だいだらぼっち」という名の大男が住んでいました。ある日、伊吹山を枕に昼寝をしていると、神様がそれを見て「怠け者、働きなさい。日本一美しい湖と山を作りなさい」と言いました。大男は「へい、かしこまりました」と答えました。
　大男は、まず近江の国に行き、穴を掘りました。それが琵琶湖です。次に、その土をもっこに入れて駿河の国に運びましたが、穴があいていて途中であちこちにこぼれました。その土でできたのが猿投山や小牧山です。お昼になって弁当を食べていると、弁当箱の中に石があったので、それを浜名湖にほかりました。それが浜名湖の「つぶて島」です。最後に、運んだ土で富士山を作りました。
　神様は喜びました。次の日、大男は伊勢の海に釣りにでかけました。大きな魚が餌に食いつき、糸をグーと引きました。そのときグッと踏んばったので、足が地面にめり込み、それが「まんとう池」になりました。その池は名古屋の八事の近くにあります。

DAIDARABOCCHI (GIANT)

　　Last month we read an American tall tale, Peco Bill, in Lesson 7. Here is a Japanese tall tale.
　　Once upon a time there lived a giant in Owari. His name was Daidarabocchi. One day he was taking a nap. His pillow was Mt. Ibuki. God saw him and said, “How lazy! You must work. Make the most beautiful lake and mountain in Japan.” “All right. I will make them,” he said.
　　First, he went to Ohmi and dug a hole. This hole is called Lake Biwa now. Then, he put the soil in the bag and carried it to Suruga. There was a hole in the bag. Some soil dropped here and there on the way, and made Mt. Sanage and Mt. Komaki. At noon, while he was eating lunch, he found a stone in his lunch box. He threw it into Lake Hamana. This stone is now named Tsubute Island. It is in Lake Hamana. Lastly, he made Mt. Fuji with the soil.
　　God was very happy. The next day the giant went fishing in the Ise Sea. A big fish ate his worm, and pulled his fishing line hard. He pulled back hard on it, too. While he was holding on, his foot sank into the ground, and made Manto Pond. It is near Yagoto, Nagoya.
