両面からものを見る

カーン・セコイア・ホワイト・バード・ウォーキングさんは新任の英会話の先生です。お父さんはアメリカインディアンです。髪型がちょっと変ですが、日本人も江戸時代は「ちょんまげ」でした。
　インディアンと日本人はどこが似ているでしょう。両方とも髪が黒く、目が茶色で、肌の色は黄色です。祖先は共に蒙古人種ですし、両者とも鯨を食べます。またインディアンの言語は音が日本語に似ています。
　私は子供の頃よく西部劇映画を見に行きました。映画では白人が「ええもん」で、インディアンが「わるもん」でした。インディアンが白人を襲撃すると、騎兵隊が現れ、インディアンをやっつけました。やっつけられると私は「あーよかった」と思いました。でも今はそう思いません。インディアンにとっては、白人は「わるもん」でした。白人はインディアンの土地に入り、インディアンを何百何千人と虐殺し、土地を奪ったのです。
　物事は両面から見なければなりませんね。

　　Mr. Khan, Sequoyah White Bird Walking is our new English Conversation teacher. His father is an American Indian. His hair style looks strange to you, but Japanese people’s hair style in the Edo era was strange, too.
　　What is common between Indians and us Japanese? We both have black hair, brown eyes, and olive skin. Both of our ancestors were Mongoloid. We both eat whales. Also, some of their languages sound like Japanese.
　　When I was a boy, I often went to see Western movies. In the movies, whites were the good people, and Indians were the bad people. When Indians attacked white people, the cavalry came and killed the Indians. I was happy to see such scenes, but now I am not. For Indians, whites were bad people. They came to the Indians’ land, killed hundreds and thousands of Indians and stole their land.
　　We must see things from both sides, mustn’t we?
