　　　　　誤解は君を殺す（２）

　私達は人間である以上、誤解は避けられない。では誤解を防ぐ方法はないのだろうか。第二の服部君のような犠牲を防ぐ方法はないのだろうか。その方法は、相手を理解し、また相手に自分を理解してもらうことだ。相手が自分を理解すればするほど誤解されなくて済むし、逆もしかりだ。だから、アメリカ人が身の安全をどう考えているかを理解すればするほど、襲われにくくなるわけだ。
　次に、アメリカ人が身の安全をどう考えているか分かってもらうために、３つ例をあげる。まず、シカゴのある会議の参加者（主にアメリカ人）に配られたパンフレットの抜粋だが、アメリカの都市では自己防衛が如何に大切かが分かる。

目的意識：目的意識を持って歩いてください。完全に道に迷ってしまい、頭が混乱していても、行き先が分かっている振りをして下さい。高いビルを見上げたり、繁華街で地図を見たり、暗い道をぶらついたり、小路に入ったりすると観光客（格好の鴨）と思われます。広い明るい道を歩き、建物には近づかないようにしてください。できるだけ一人歩きは避けてください。

　　Misunderstanding is inevitable since we are all human beings. Then, isn’t there any way to avoid misunderstanding? Isn’t there any way to prevent another sacrifice like Hattori-kun? Yes, there is. It is to understand others, and let them understand you. The more you understand others, the less you will misunderstand them, and vice versa. Accordingly, the more you understand how Americans conceive of security, the less likely you will be attacked in America.
　　Here are three pieces of information that will help you to understand what Americans think about security. One is an excerpt from a brochure given to the participants—mostly Americans—at a certain conference in Chicago. It shows the importance of safety in an American city.

ATTITUDE: Walk with an attitude. Have a sense of mission and direction (even if you feel hopelessly lost and befuddled). Gazing at tall buildings, studying guide maps on busy streets, casually strolling down dark streets, and trips down alley ways are signs of a tourist (aka easy prey). Stay on open, well lit streets, and avoid walking too close to buildings. Walk in groups when possible.
